Carisha Swanson, House Beautiful's market director and resident kitchen trend forecaster, gives us the download. "With glass, everything lining the cabinet shelves needs to be just so because you can see straight through. But with metal grates, you don't have to worry about packaging your essentials in a pretty way since you can only get a peek inside," she explains. At the same time, the partial visibility makes a small space feel less claustrophobic and unidimensional than solid cabinet doors. Perforated fronts also allow for better ventilation.
Plus, metal grate cabinets can introduce architectural intrigue, Swanson adds. Specifically, "you can customize them to create a historical look, choose any pattern and design you want, or use them for a more elevated take on chicken wire." They're perfect for someone who wants to introduce a pop of glamorous (or edgy) metallic, too.
